My husband wants us to start our own roofing bussiness and are looking for sucessful strategies! Any advice?

my husband and I started our own carpet cleaning company 2 years ago this november. We now make between 22-25K per month. (only 2 years later) However…it wasnt that easy….we didnt advertise at all. its who we knew……..you see…..
I was in residential property management (managing apartment communities) and my husband was a carpet cleaner for apartment communities (this is how we met)
we were tired of working for everyone else and decided to give it a go.
anyways….we would NOT have succeeded if it hadnt been for who we knew….people knew we did a good job dropped other vendors just to use us….if it hadnt been for those people..we DEFINATELY would have failed.

Since you are doing the right thing and planning this move, I’ll suggest that you write a business plan for the roofing business. I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. You have to determine whether you’ll start a web based business or one with a store front. I’d call the local office of SCORE (go to and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE.
The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting a roofing business and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you’ll concentrate on (your market ) and how you’ll go after them.
You’ll need to register the business with your state controller’s office, get the required contractor’s license, and make sure that you have any city and county licenses if any are needed where you live. All of this will come out in a business plan.
