   There are roofs made of wood and shingles in my neighborhood, and I live in KS. I don’t know what the roofs are made of in the Northwest.

   freeze thaw cycles and lots of rain. that’s why. it happens in the northeast, too. if your roof is installed correctly, and you have proper ventilation under it, it should last. if you buy the cheapest shingles and go with the cheapest roofer, you might not get a roof to last as long as it’s supposed to. good luck.
