What is the correct weight for roofing felt paper?

I know weights can vary. Don’t want to break the bank given the roof square footage. I’m putting on a 30 year 3 tab asphalt shingle roof. Thanks!

  1. Felt paper is fairly inexpensive. I would use thirty lb instead of the 15.

  2. 15 lb. covers 432 sq. ft, 30 lb covers 216 sq. ft. You will need twice as many rolls of 30 lb. as you would 15 lb. There isn’t a lot of advantage using 30 over 15. Price them both, and then you can decide how much you want to spend. I do recommend using Ice and Water Shield for the first course and in valleys. Hope this helps.

  3. I’ve always heard to get the best live out of your new shingles, to put down the best felt. I would go ahead and use the 30 lbs.
