A Guide for DIY Folks for drilling

by Lance Goodwin

The drill bit market has several types of drill bits available to choose from ranging from low cost to very expensive.

The low end of the drill bit market is usually taken up by the steel bits. The next high priced are the ones which are made up of high speed steel as well as titanium coated ones. The most expensive ones are made up of carbide or cobalt.

The drill bits vary based on the material being drilled. For wood the most common ones are the twist drills. These are also used for plastic or metal. The bard point bit as well as the spade bit is used for the wood but they may vary based on the size of the hole being drilled.

There is a special drill bit called the installer bit which is used for the installation of the cable wires or the phone wires. These have special hole through which the wire can be pulled.

The drill bit used for brass or copper materials is known as the step bit. For glass the glass bit is used and for the masonry work there is the masonry drill bit which is used in front of the rotary hammer or regular hammer drills.

For doing smaller things in the house you will need a power drill. These drills can easily drill a hole in any household material like wood, glass or even the stained glass.

For home use the regular drill bit set containing the steel and spiral bits is enough. These can easily drill holes ranging from eight millimeters to thirty two millimeters. These cannot be used for drilling in concrete or metal.

As a matter of precaution always try to ask the manufactures or read the material which comes with the drill for the drill bits best suited for the drill you have bought.
