More Than Just A Garage: Transformation Into A Special Room

by Ruth Becker

You can maximize the other rooms in your house not just with functionality. Sure, you have to use your basement and garage’s full potentials, but you can also make these rooms look much better than is normally expected. You can even transform one of these rooms into a special place of relaxation or an additional space for house parties.

You might have thought of dividing the living room into two sections to accomplish your task of creating a special space. Maybe the idea of building an outdoor shed appealed to you. Doing these things aren’t necessary because you can make a special room out of an existing and unexpected part of your house. Ever thought of the garage? Yes, the garage can be your special space (your car will be glad to have your company) and with some simple renovating techniques, you are on your way to relaxing in a new hangout room.

The decorating starts with color. A rather dull, worn-out or bleak (or all three) garage can look entirely different and way better with a new color. Choose a bright color for the wall that reflects light well. Painting the floors too will give the garage a brand-new, clean look. For a brighter appearance, add good lighting in dark corners and if your overhead light has gone musty, change it and see how a new one can instantly brighten the room.

Organize. Have a shelf or storage cabinet for storing the tools and other stuff in the garage. It will tidy up everything and it will help you find things faster. You won’t believe how the room will look much more airy with no litter and things loitering on the floor. You can install pegs to hang heavier tools and allot a space for equipment. From now on, don’t lean your grass mower in your car. Place it in the appropriate section of the garage.

Clean the room well and organize the things. Have a storage cabinet or a layered shelf to keep things orderly. You can also have a board where you can hang your tools. For an easy return to their proper places, spray paint the board while the tools are still hanging so their shapes will be molded. When it dries, you’ll see the marks and you can always easily return the tools in their proper places.

Place a few pieces of furniture and stereo and TV and you have a place to relax. A lamp in the corner with a comfy chair would be a great place to catch up on some reading.

Complete the look by decorating with an area rug.

If you decide to bring in a furniture set, say for your sofa, placing the rug under it looks nice. Otherwise, you can choose a furniture piece and accent it with the rug. For instance, you can use it as your chair’s cushion or your table’s base.

Choosing a bamboo area rug might be a good choice here. This will depend on your furniture style. If the furniture is mismatched, it is very easy to change the look by using furniture throws or covers. This way you can make your look more harmonious.

You don’t necessarily have to buy new furniture. You can use old ones or buy secondhand items and just utilize nice furniture covers or throws. An age-old throw pillow will still look nice with an attractive cover. A chair can have different looks with every change of its cover or cushions. Accent and accessorize. You don’t have to spend much.

Decorating the garage or the basement is not an arduous task. With the help of area rugs and enhancing the look with the right color and choice of furniture, it can be just like any other major room in the house. Perhaps even just as good as the living room.
