It’s easy to make a mistake with window valances. If you see one you love you can start thinking it would look beautiful in your home and make a big mistake. Here are 4 things to be aware of and avoid when you are choosing valances.

1. Choosing the Wrong Style of Valance

The style of window valance should always match the general feeling of the room. No matter how much you love it a formal valance is not going to look good in an informal room like a country kitchen. And a romantic style valance will look terrible in a minimalist lounge. There are valances to match all kinds of room decoration and you need to seek out one which is appropriate.

2. Getting the Fabric Design Wrong

Avoid too much pattern in one room - it will look too busy and give a cluttered look to the decor. Valances usually look best if they match the curtains or, if you are hanging them with blinds, use a fabric found elsewhere in the room. If you prefer a plain valance with patterned curtains trim the valance with the matching fabric to tie the arrangement together.

3. Selecting the Wrong Type of Fabric

Even if you have seen a fantastic scarf valance arrangement using thin voile somewhere it will not look good over your heavy drapes, nor will a heavy valance look good over thin voile curtains. Valances need to match the weight of the curtain fabric for a balanced look - easily achieved of course if you are using the same fabric as the curtains in your valances. A valance which is meant to drape such as a swag needs to use a soft fabric which drapes well while a geometrically shaped valance needs a crisper fabric. If you are lining your valances make sure that the lining is suitable for the main valance fabric.

4. Choosing the Wrong Size

It is not such a difficult task to measure for valances because the width of the drapery rod is the main measurement you need however it is still easy to get the size wrong. The main issue here is getting your valance out of proportion to the size of the window. A tiny valance on top of a big tall window or a long valance on a short one is not a good look. If you are unsure experiment with a piece of cloth until you get the right size.
